JOHANNESBURG - Pick n Pay is facing a backlash from union SACCAWU over planned changes to its labour conditions.
The retailer has begun a Section 189A consultation process, saying the move is aimed at improving efficiency and keeping the business competitive in a changing retail environment.
SACCAWU has strongly criticised the proposal, warning that as many as 22 workers could be affected.
The union said employees are being forced to choose between retrenchment or accepting reduced hours, lower pay and fewer benefits.
Pick n Pay insists the process is not meant to result in job losses and said it is committed to finding alternatives to avoid retrenchments.
However, the union argues the company is placing the burden of its financial struggles on the workers.
